Water gates & long travel / POSITION FEEDBACK

Draw-Wire Sensors for Water-Gate Position & Long Travel

Specify mechanical gate opening with an identified datum, cable routing and environmental conditions. Extended ranges require project-specific feasibility.

OPENING DATUM / PAYOUT WINDOW

Eight meters of gate movement can need more than eight meters of payout.

Define opening relative to an agreed mechanical closed-position datum. Then identify the minimum and maximum sensor cable payout over the complete route. Fixed routing can consume part of the available payout even though it does not change the movement span.

ILLUSTRATIVE REQUIRED PAYOUT4 m → 12 m

8 m change between endpoints

Check both endpoints.

An 8 m change does not prove that a sensor with an 8 m or 10 m range can accommodate a required 12 m maximum payout. Confirm the selected device’s usable window, initial cable length, end reserves and any separately approved extension arrangement.

A fixed extension can reposition the attachment geometry where approved; it does not increase the measuring mechanism’s calibrated travel. A guide pulley redirects the path and must be matched to cable bend radius, alignment and the installation environment.

Gate opening and water level are different measurements.

Mechanical position

Specify the gate leaf, hoist or linkage point actually connected to the cable. Hoist rotation, cable slack, elastic movement and linkage backlash can make an indirect drive measurement differ from the gate leaf position.

The illustrated sensor above a rising gate reads less cable extension as the gate opens. Agree the signal direction and zero/span mapping rather than assuming that extension always means opening.

Site exposure and reference access

Describe splash, immersion conditions, freezing, debris, free spans, wind, cable supports and access for inspection. Cable path changes and environmental effects belong in the installed measurement error budget.

Mechanical opening is not a water-level or flow measurement. Define those separate process variables with their own suitable measurement method.

Choose the long-range project scope from the actual route.

Up to 10–15 m requests

Review the applicable DWP-POS or DWP-ENC envelope and the full payout requirement. The mounting and cable route still need confirmation; a shorter movement does not automatically qualify the installation.

15–100 m project requests

Use DWP-LNG for feasibility review of drum capacity, tension, routing and installation calibration. A 100 m request is a project target, not evidence of a released, tested or stocked 100 m sensor.

Review long-range transducer scope →

State the PLC input, required position recovery after power loss and independent travel limits. Process position feedback alone does not establish the gate’s emergency-stop or protection architecture.

Payout, 100 m feasibility and exposure

Does a long cable route mean the measuring stroke must equal that total length?

Review both the sensor’s payout window and its change in payout, including any approved fixed extension. A fixed route and the active movement span are different quantities.

Is a 100 m sensor available as a standard model?

This website accepts 100 m project requests for feasibility review. Availability, mechanism, verified performance and delivery must be confirmed in a configuration-specific offer.

Can an enclosure option establish immersion or ice resistance?

No. State the actual exposure, depth, duration, temperature and moving-cable conditions. Request model-specific evidence and a maintainable installation plan.
